Finally, after giving us short teasers for the trailer, we’ve not gotten the first proper trailer for Rian Johnson‘s Looper, one of my most eagerly anticipated films of 2012. And you can watch it after the cut.
Writer-director Rian Johnson is one very talented guy who knows how to play well with every genre you throw at him. After his stellar debut, Brick, which was a noir detective story set in a California highschool, he did The Brothers Bloom, a postmodern caper film (and he also directed Fly, one of the best Breaking Bad episodes, which is saying something).
Well now he’s upping the ante once again, with his biggest film yet; one that comes with a big budget, big names and, in my case, really big expectations. The film is Looper, which sees Mr. Johnson reuniting with his Brick star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and this time he’s taking on the time-traveling science-fiction genre.
This is how Looper goes: In 2072 time-traveling exists, and is used only by the criminal underworld who employ it to send back targets they want dead 30 years into the past where a hitman, called “loopers”, does the deed and collects a pretty paycheck for it. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a looper who’s sent his future self for killing. And if you think Mr. Gordon-Levitt looks weird it’s because he’s been altered to look like Bruce Willis, who plays his older self. Pretty awesome, right?
Written and directed by Rian Johnson; starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Jeff Daniels, Noah Segan, Piper Perabo and Garret Dillahunt. Looper opens September 28 (nice birthday present for me). Watch the trailer below.
