The concept of the film is quite good, the cast is actually quite talented, but the movie is seriously crappy. The idea is simple but good material, a Mexican-American woman marrying an African-American man and the culture clash that precedes the wedding when their families meet. This film could have been done quite decently by a different director probably, and quite possibly could have been a reasonable hit with its target audience.

But instead the film serves like a long pilot for a sitcom that wouldn’t have been picked up by any network, it tells the story of a Mexican law student who falls in love with a guy who’s at med school, they’ve been living together but hiding it from their parents because they’re gonna move to Laos and her family would kill her if she drops out of school and because her mom wants her to remain a virgin until she gets married.

See? The idea for the film is actually quite good, but the script sucks and the actors, as talented as they are, are just as bad acting it out, especially the arguments between the two dads, even if one of them is played by Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker. That’s the way the film goes, stupid arguments with stupid conclusions that are stupidly acted and just there to move the film along, and then there’s a softball game which is the icing on the shit cake.

But then again, there are three bright spots, and they are the three actors, Lance Gross is the guy, and he’s someone I had seen pretty much nothing from, he’s really cool, and then there’s Regina King who’s just awesome, and America Ferrera, who’s someone I like seeing if anything just because of Ugly Betty. Film stills sucks, though.

Grade: D+
