[Trailer] – Ted

Seth MacFarlane is a pretty talented guy, starting out at Hanna-Barbera animating Cartoon Network shows like Dexter’s Laboratory and Johnny Bravo, then moving on to create Family Guy in 1999, which is still running and in 2009 became the first animated series to be nominated for the Outstanding Comedy Series award at the Emmy Awards since The Flintstones back in 1961.

The success of Family Guy has brought him a great deal of success, going on to create American Dad! and The Cleveland Show (a Family Guy spin-off) for Fox, as well as being tapped to revamp The Flintstones, a show that has certainly inspired him, for a new set of episodes to begin airing next year.

Last year he branched out from TV, releasing a music album full of big-band American standard tunes, a style of music that has been heard throughout his music shows. Well, this year he’s branching out from TV again, to create direct his first feature-length film, Ted, which is appropriately rated R, and the first red band trailer for which you can watch above.

Moreover, the film is actually a live-action effort, though one combined with animation. And while this is a new thing for Mr. MacFarlane, his style is very much in evidence. Especially his voice, which he uses to bring to life many Family Guy characters, coming out of the titular character, Ted, a stuffed teddy bear a kid once wished into coming alive.

That sort of thing, a boy wishing his adorable teddy bear to life, has been covered by children’s films before. What Mr. MacFarlane has done, is tell the story of what happens after the closing credits of those films roll, telling the story of a thirty-something man, played by Mark Wahlberg, with a potty-mouthed teddy bear by his side, preventing him from fully growing up even though the girl he wants to be with, played by Mila Kunis, wants the bear gone. I love Mr. Wahlberg doing ridiculous comedy while playing the straight man, so I’m certainly looking forward to see what Ted has in store.

Directed by Seth MacFarlane; written by Seth MacFarlane, Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild; starring Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth McFarlane, Laura Vandervoort, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel McHale, Jessica Stroup and Patrick Warburton. Ted opens July 13.
