[Trailer] – To Rome With Love

I’m a huge Woody Allen fanboy, the guy has a direct line to my funnybone and I find myself always appreciating even his lesser efforts. Now, while opinions about the work of Mr. Allen during the past decade are pretty varied, I think he’s produced three perfect or near-perfect films in Match Point, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and last year’s Midnight in Paris (which I gave an A to and ranked as my 14th favorite film of 2011) during that time. Moving away from New York to European cities has really reenergized him, not to mention Midnight in Paris brought him his biggest commercial success yet and one of the best critical receptions he’s had in a while to go along with a record third Oscar for screenwriting.

Now, whether you want to debate the quality of his work, which we can most surely do, one thing is undeniable: the guy is as consistent as ever. This is a writer-director that releases a film a year like clockwork at seventy-six. And if the trailer for his 2012 effort, To Rome with Love, which you can watch above, is any indication, he’s hit another home run.

This time around he’s gone from Paris to Rome, and this one’s not drenched in awesome nostalgia for the 1920’s and an Ermest Hemingway appearance. Instead it seems like we’ll get a much more straightforward, comedy consisting of four vignettes that feel so incredibly Woody Allen you’ll want to be able to see this one already.

Of course part of what makes watching Woody Allen movies so amazing is to see what the actors he casts will do with his brilliant dialogue. This time around Mr. Allen himself is returning in front of the camera, acting for the first time since Scoop back in 2006, and he’s brought along people like Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg and Alec Baldwin for the ride; the whole cast of this one seems like it’ll work wonders with his words, especially those three. I honestly can’t wait to see this one.

Written and directed by Woody Allen; starring Woody Allen, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penélope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig, Ellen Page, Judy Davis and Alison Pill. To Rome with Love opens June 22.
