[Trailer] – Magic Mike

19 Apr

Steven Soderbergh‘s third-to-last movie ever (if his retirement plans hold up) is set to be a film loosely based on Channing Tatum‘s days as a male stripper. After this one any doubts about how versatile a director he is should really be put to rest. In any case, the trailer for Magic Mike is after the cut.

I’m actually a pretty damn huge Steven Soderbergh fan, so I’m actually psyched for this film. It seems weird for Steven Soderbergh to team up with Channing Tatum, but apparently he liked him after working together on Haywire and will feature the actor again in his upcoming The Bitter Pill. But he definitely saw something in the guy, and after seeing 21 Jump Street I can finally see it too. Not to mention that there has to be something in his tales from his stirpper past that drew Mr. Sodebergh to the story, and seeing that world through his eyes could be really fun.

Here’s a director known to jump from genre to genre with great success and never faltering, and this seems to be a really new move from him while still very much being a Steven Soderbergh joint. It looks like one of his most mainstream films, his first shot at a romantic comedy of sorts with a different kind of rhythm and tone than what he’s used to; but then you look at the framing and the lensing and how it all looks, and you recognize that it’s Steven Soderbergh behind it, and the next thing you know you’re really looking forward to a stripper movie starring Channing Tatum and a slew of other actors who like to take their shirts off.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh; written by Reid Carolin; starring Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Cody Horn and Olivia MunnMagic Mike opens June 29, watch the trailer below.
