[Trailer] – Ruby Sparks

19 Apr

You can go ahead and file this one under “Incredibly Excited About”. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are finally going to give us a follow-up to their 2006 breakout hit Little Miss Sunshine (which I’m a big fan of), and from the looks of it this one’s going to be another winner. You can watch the trailer for Ruby Sparks after the cut.

This time around they’re reteaming with one of the stars of their debut, Paul Dano, who this time around stars as young novelist who achieved a lot of success really early into his career but has recently been struggling. But then inspiration strikes him, and he creates a character named Ruby Sparks, the girl of his dreams. Until the dreams become a reality and he finds Ruby sitting on his couch, a real flesh-and-bone person played by Zoe Kazan, who also wrote the film and is the real-life girlfriend of Mr. Dano which is evident in how great their chemistry seems to be just from looking at the trailer.

The concept, which is something out of a Charlie Kaufman film with hints of Stranger Than Fiction, is one I love. And even though it obviously all hangs on how they’ll tie up this story at the end of the film, for now it looks a lot of fun, with these really quirky romantic comedy elements mixed in with some genuine characters and emotions. Expectations are running really high on this one for me.

Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris; written by Zoe Kazan; starring Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan, Antonio Banderas, Annette Bening, Steve Coogan, Elliott Gould, Chris Messina, Deborah Ann Woll and Alia Shawkat. Ruby Sparks opens July 25.
