[Trailer] – Lawless

25 Apr

John Hillcoat‘s follow-up to The Road is finally upon us, and the trailer for Lawless really does look pretty damn brilliant, so if you weren’t excited for this one before I’d recommend to adjust your expectations accordinly now. Watch the trailer after the cut.

Lawless was originally named The Wettest County in the World, after the Matt Bondurant novel it’s based on, but then it was just The Wettest County and now it’s called Lawless, taking the name that belonged to Terrence Malick‘s upcoming film (with Terry’s permission though, so it’s all good).

The cast for this one is truly phenomenal, with a bunch of established and up-and-coming actors rounding up the Prohibition-set drama that no doubt will provide more than one great performance from these actors and be a great setting for Mr. Hillcoat’s down-and-dirty kind of direction.

It tells the true story of the Bondurant Brothers, three siblings who dabble in bootlegging in Prohibition-era Virginia and how they deal with the authorities of the time. Again, this looks great, people; the marriage of the western and gangster generes, the epic scope of it all, the great sceneries, the performances, everything, this one’s going to be great.

Directed by John Hillcoat; written by Nick Cave adapting from the Matt Bondurant novel; starring Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jason Clarke, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska and Dane DeHaan. Lawless will screen in competition at next month’s Cannes Film Festival, and then opens August 31.
