[Trailer] – The Gangster Squad

9 May

Ruben Fleischer followed up his incredible debut Zombieland with last year’s 30 Minutes or Less which was something of a letdown (I gave it a B-). But now he seems to be back in the game with his first foray into a serious drama, The Gangster Squad, a trailer for which you can watch after the cut.

You have Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen in the late-forties Los Angeles just pretty much owning the town, getting rich of illegal activities, having lots of allies in his pocket, including part of the police and government. But then there’s a task force in the LAPD that decides to take him down, and those are the events that this film will follow.

Look, we had the trailer for Argo yesterday and now this one; I think it’s now pretty clear that 2012 is shaping up to be a damn great movie year. This trailer just looks sick, and I think 30 Minutes or Less was actually a good thing now in retrospective, as it allowed Mr. Fleischer some time to mature and handle a bigger budget, and served as preparation for this one, in which his visual style seems to be really on point. I love this, it just looks like a whole lot of fun. And then there’s the cast, which is just full of people I love. Sucks there’s still no release date for this one to pencil in our calendars.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer; written by Will Beall; starring Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Peña, Robert Patrick, Josh Pence, Frank Grillo, Mireille Enos and Nick Nolte. The Gangster Squad opens later this year.
