[Trailer] – Silver Linings Playbook

The trailer for a movie that’s sure to get some pondering over come the awards season, Silver Linings Playbook, is now out, and you can watch it after the cut.

At Cannes this year, The Weinstein Company unveiled footage from three of its films its hoping will make a big awards push. Two of those are easily two of the most anticipated films of all year, and we’ve already seen some (great) promotional material for them: Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master and Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained. But the third film, David O. Russell‘s Silver Linings Playbook, we had seen nothing from until just now with this trailer. And it looks damn good.

It stars Bradley Cooper as a former teacher who’s just been released from a four-year treatment in a mental institution. He moves back in with this mother and tries his best to pull his life back together, remaining absolutely undiscouraged along the way. Along the way he meets Tiffany, played by the great Jennifer Lawrence, a girl who just like him hasn’t had life turned out just like she wanted, so they form a unique friendship, with hints of possibly something more.

Like I said, this actually looks like it has a lot of promise. The cast is just super strong, and Mr. Cooper and Ms. Lawrence both seem to be in top form here, which is always really nice to see. The one thing I’m cautious about is that it seems to veer into this super schmaltzy crowd-pleasing tone, but this is David O. Russell and he’s never done that, so I’m hoping he’ll find just the right balance. I’m excited for this one.

Directed by David O. Russell; written by David O. Russell, based on the Matthew Quick novel; starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Anupam Kher, Julia Stiles, Jacki Weaver and Chris Tucker. Silver Linings Playbook opens November 21.
