[Trailer] – Stoker

26 Sep

Park Chan-wook is of course the acclaimed Korean filmmaker responsible for his impeccable Vengeance Trilogy, which includes the brilliant Oldboy. Next year he’s releasing Stoker, his English-language debut, and you can watch the first trailer for it below.

It really is all that you would expect from the director, heavily stylized and overall seriously impressive. It feels kind of Hitchcockian in a way as we follow a young girl played by Mia Wasikowska mourning the death of her father. Then her mysterious uncle comes into town and things start getting pretty weird pretty fast.

The atmosphere looks amazing and, again, the visual stuff is just really doing it for me here. Not to mention that the performances seem to be really, really great; Nicole Kidman as the mother of the family looks tremendous, Ms. Wasikowska is obviously one of the best young actresses of her generation and then you have Matthew Goode who may have just gotten the role that will finally catapult him to the big leagues here. Color me very, very excited for Stoker.

Directed by Park Chan-wook; written by Wentworth Miller and Erin Cressida Wilson; starring Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Dermot Mulroney and Jacki Weaver. Stoker opens March 1.
