I remember when I first decided to start a blog to review films I vowed I’d try to see as many films from any given year I could, so that I could get a real overview of the whole year in film and not try not to skip those films which I knew were just disasters waiting to happen. I also vowed that I’d see at least one more film each year than I had seen the previous one. In 2010, my first year doing this, I saw 210 films, which I thought was a pretty good number. In 2011 I saw 256 releases from that year, upping the quota from the previous year by a whopping 46 films. That number, 256, always seemed pretty huge and I doubted I’d be able to pass it this year. Well, Les Misérables (though I’m seeing it in January) is the 256th 2012 release I’ve seen, and I still have a few more films to go, so I guess 2013 will be the real challenge.

Writers: Eric Darnell and Noah Baumbach, based on the characters by Mr. Darnell and Tom McGrath
Starring: Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer, Andy Richter, Tom McGrath, Bryan Cranston, Jessica Chastain, Martin Short, Paz Vega, Frances McDormand
MPAA Rating: PG, some mild action and rude humor
Runtime: 93 min
IMDb Rating: 7.0
Rotten Tomatoes: 75%
Metacritic: 59

The Madagascar franchise hasn’t been groundbreaking or anything, but it’s actually hard to find much fault with any of it, plus it’s pretty damn successful so it’s not like it’s stopping any time soon. The first film came in 2005 and made over $530 million worldwide, then three years after that we got the second one, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, and that made over $600 million all around the world. So yeah, they’re profitable; not to mention that, to me personally, the second one was actually also an improvement in quality over the first one, which was still quite decent.

Sacha Baron Cohen is one of those guys who you either love or you hate because of how wildly provocative and occasionally offensive he likes to be. I personally was a huge fan of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, I thought that film was pretty damn masterful in how it was so hilariously offensive, and it was a perfect showcase for Mr. Baron Cohen’s particular brand of comedy that relies on people not knowing they’re being filmed while he’s in character.
